No start after U/G from W98

Performed what seemed like a successful U/g from W98se to XP Home (still on
FAT 32). Restarted several times OK. Customer phones up next day, PC is
hanging on splash screen - moving bars in middle of screen stop after very
short time, or sometimes don't even start at all. Started in safe mode fine,
so tried disabling all start up options but still hangs, so ran setup from CD
in safe mode. All went well until PC restarts, then hangs again, now won't
even start in safe mode, because of 'XP setup cannot run in safemode, setup
will now restart' message, at which point PC restarts and hangs. Tried
extracting new versions of Autoexec.nt Config.nt Command.com and Kernel32.dll
to system32 folder, and thought I had solved it when setup restarted, but
then it froze on installing extra devices, and after resetting....hangs on
restart. Doh....

Boot from the XP CD and opt to do a repair install.

It turned out to be the modem causing the fault. After removal all was well.
