Hi: I used to print just fine with my HP 722c Deskjet on
LPT1 when I had Windows ME.
Recently I installed a new hard drive and did a clean
install of Windows XP Pro. It recognized and installed a
printer driver for my HP 722c, but when I clicked on the
printer icon from any program (Word, IE 6, etc.) the print
spooler icon would appear at the bottom of the screen, and
then would disappear after a minute or so, but no
printing! I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the
printer driver, which went fine, except it didn't help the
printer work.
I opened up "Control Panel", "System", then "Device
Manager" and checked the settings for LPT1. Ahah! The
little box for "enable autodetect" was not selected. I
clicked on that, and then a whole bunch of files loaded
when I clicked on "OK." The printer was working!!
The only thing is, it quits working when I shut the
machine off! I can get it to work again by drilling down
to "Device Manager", then unclicking (not restarting after
hitting "OK") and then clicking "enable autodetect." It
prints fine until I shut the machine off and turn it on
again, until I repeat the process.
I have tried a new printer cable, with no difference.
Thank you.
