Windows XP Hotfix for slow templates

Last week I posted a question to which the reply was to
contact Microsfot for a hotfix, which I did. I
downloaded it, but it didn't come with any instructions
on what to do with the contents of the zip file.

The hotfix was for a slow template problem described in
article 832272.

There are two executables in the zip, windowsXP-Kb823372-
ia64-enu.exe and and windowsxp-kb823372-ia64-enu-
symbols.exe. The first one says that update.exe is not a
valid win32 application and terminates. The other
doesn't appear to do anything at all.

Does anyone know how to apply this hotfix? Also, does
the "ia64" in the file name refer to an intel or alpha 64
bit processor? ...I'm just trying to fix a few XP pro
workstations. Is this a server patch??

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Maybe I am just not understaning this, but it seems like
I just got pointed to the wrong file, and I need to
contact Microsoft again...

I was directed to download only one file, which contained
two files, both of which I named below. They BOTH appear
to be for a different platform, so I don't understand
what you meant about 'the one is for 64 bit
processors...' - which one?

I did read the article, that is where I found out I
needed a hotfix. But how can I activate the fix as
outlined in part 2, if I haven't applied it yet?

Thanks,
Miche

Ignore the 64 bit version, you do not need it on your computer and in
fact it will not work.
Microsoft simply bundles both together so they do not have to worry
which is needed for a specific computer.

Double click on the other one.
Follow prompts if any.
Then follow all the steps in part 2.

You can verify it is installed by using the appropriate gray box on
the article to compare the changed files.

Jupiter, have you looked at the files names the OP listed. They both have
the "ia64" in the name, so it's likely BOTH are wrong. Or do you see
something there that I missed?

Oops, You seem to be right, I guess I did not look close enough.
I think I did a bad thing and assumed one was 64 bit so the other must
be 32 bit.

Miche;
As D. Currie pointed out both files seem to be 64 bit.
You need to call back so you can get the correct files.
I apologize for my error.

Thanks to all.

I recontacted Microsoft this morning, and they promised
to send me the link to the other file (for my platform).
As yet, however, I have not received it. Do they
typically take more than a day or so to send out?
Curious.

Thanks again,
Michelene
