Multiple Hotfix Deployment didn't work as expected per kb296861

Hi,
Last week I needed to reinstall everything fresh on a Dell Dimension 4600
that came with XP SP1 OEM media for a client who had only dial-up internet.
My plan to save time was to do the Dell wipe/restore, use my SP2 on CD, then
a batch file that I'd pre-built to install the critical hotfixes only using
my Technet Security Updates disc to pick up everything in 2005-2006. After
the hotfixes were applied, then I added antivirus and went to the internet
for the rest of the remaining service.

Unfortunately, this did not work as I expected. The critical hotfixes that
I had just added from my batch file were still showing as required (after
rebooting) when I went to the internet, taking additional time to download,
and moreover leading me to question whether the machine had actually been
protected by those fixes that were supposedly applied earlier (as displayed
in the add/remove programs dialog).

Other people have now heard about this 'great new method for deployment' and
before I spread any word, good or bad, I want to see where there might have
been 'pilot error' or whether it might be a Dell OEM issue. Can anyone give
any clues?

My batch file is below.

Thanks,
Rob

To update xp from scratch or from SP1 to SP2,windows update adds more
than just specific nos updates.Try once youre at SP1,get to updater for the
few files required for SP2,once SP2 is ready to get installed, install from
youre
cd,once thru with SP2,re open updater for the latest releases.

Hi Andrew,
Not sure I understand your reply. First, what is "nos"? Secondly, I was
only applying the the criticals for post-SP2, as far as I could judge, given
the timeframe I was searching on the Technet Security Disc 0238.12. Security
Bulletins on this Disc are organized by bulletin number (eg "msc06-001 thru
msc06-003"). In each case I checked to see if there were XP SP2 components
and if so, brought them into the batch file directory before building the
batch file.

Hope this clarifies what I did and you'll be able to decode your response
for me.

Thanks,
Rob
