My laptop has XP home on it and after a shutdown
(lowbattery) when it rebooted, Windows would not start
up, instead a message saying Windows did not start
successfully appears giving options to boot in Safe Mode,
Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt,
Last Known Good Configuration, and Start Windows
Normally. I have tried all of these options and the
system just cycles back to the same message. I contacted
the manufacturer (Averatec) and they indicated the only
solution was to use the recovery disk. Only problem with
this is I do not want to lose all my data. Does anybody
have any other options, or am I out of luck.

I'm not sure about your particular recovery disc, Eric, but if you can boot
to it, (setting the BIOS to look for the CD-ROM first) you should be able to
carry out a 'Repair Installation'. Check with your PC manufacturers that you
can do this. Otherwise, I'm afraid it looks like you are out of luck - and I
think your manufacturer wants reminding of the problems they caused.

Good luck,

Ed
