Windows XP Home "Upgrade"????

R

Ron

I'm looking to replace my current operating system, Windows 2000 Pro, with
Windows XP Home.

Can someone tell me if this http://tinyurl.com/367vxp is an actual Windows
XP Home Edition installation disc or if it is something else.

I've looked at some others and they don't say "upgrade" on them.

I believe that you can not do an "in-place" (do not format/erase)
upgrade of Windows 2000 Pro to XP Home. You may be able to do a
"clean" install of XP Home Upgrade with your Windows 2000 Pro as
"qualifing" media.

First off, to upgrade from Windows 2000 Professional to XP
would require an XP Professional Upgrade CD. There is no direct
upgrade path from Win 2K to XP Home Edition. If you wanted XP
Home on your machine, you would have to perform a clean
installation with a "full" version of XP Home.

What that picture doesn't show you is the side panel where it
says the following.

"Attention!
The enclosed program will search your hard disk and/or CD to
confirm your eligibility for this upgrade. The software will
install only if your are a licensed user of one of the
following products:

Microsoft Windows 98
Windows 98 Second Edition
Windows Millennium Edition"

Take a look at this article for more info.

On a personal note, EBay would probably be the last place I'd
look to purchase software. Up until Vista was released, many
local retailers were offering XP upgrade CD's at half price or
less. It's possible you may see them run similar offers in the
future to clear out their remaining stock.

Good luck

I recommend you not buy software on Ebay. That aside, you cannot upgrade
from Windows 2000 to XP Home, that's a downgrade and not supported. To do
an in place upgrade to retain programs and data it will take an upgrade
version of XP Pro. If you still want XP Home, you'll need to buy a full
copy of XP Home and do a clean install. The lowest cost option is an OEM
version available at many software retailers.

An OEM version has some limitations.
1. It is tied to the first computer on which it's installed, per the
license, and cannot be moved to a different computer.
2. It cannot be sold or transferred to another party.
3. There is no tech support from MS. You are responsible for you're own
support.
4. An OEM version can only do a clean install, not an upgrade.

Caution about buying software on Ebay, and in particular XP OEM software.
Due to point 2 above, any OEM version of XP that is offered for sale which
has been previously installed on a computer is not a legitimate sale. So
you would have to know for sure that OEM XP has never been installed. That
is something you could never find out before the sale. Another pit fall is
that you might get a non genuine copy with a pirated product key. So don't
buy XP OEM on eBay.
