Windows XP Home -- Unknown STOP error

Crash Override

I'm not sure I'm asking this in the proper place but it is the most similar
area. I had a client that brought in a computer complaining of excessive
popups. I attempted to install an antivirus program however I could not run
any .exe files. I opened task manager and found several instances of
spools.exe running which, through research, could be related to the
W32/Kassbot-C trojan. I then proceeded to remove the drive and scanned it
for viruses by using a USB adapter to another computer. The virus scan found
50+ infected files and proceeded to remove those. A second virus scan stated
the drive was clean. Upon reinstalling the drive I received a BSOD. The
BSOD read "STOP: c0000135 {Unable To Locate Component} This application has
failed to start because basefsghg32 was not found. Re-installing the
application may fix this problem". I was unable to find any help relating to
the "basefsghg32" issue. I then proceeded to do a repair install of the
computer and am now stuck at the same BSOD. Is my only option to completely
erase the drive and reinstall windows or does someone know what is causing
this error and a possible solution?

Thanks in advance for your help

Hi,
What about if you hooked the HDD back again and searched for the basefsghg32
and rename it to basefsghg32.old (all instances of that file)and then Put
back the HDD and start the machine.
If does help I will check this machine further by running the hijackthis and
analyze the log.
Another to try to repair the registry:

Well, it appears that your system was pretty compromised, and the damage
caused by the infections and cures may be considerable and subtle.

You may find that it's best (fastest and most reliable) to cut your losses
and start from a known-good position, by deleting the existing partition(s),
creating new ones, formatting and reinstalling.

You apparently already have the items needed to back up the drive so that
you can save your data and copy it back when done. If you're careful and
prepared, you can have a stable and reliable system running again in a few
hours, and you don't have to babysit the system the whole time.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. The suggestion for removing things in
Safe Mode is out as the machine won't boot. The idea for searching for the
file has been tried and the file doesn't exist. As far as just cutting my
losses and reinstalling, that's probably what will have to be done. I plan
on starting the re-installation process soon but I am still curious as to the
nature of the error. So, again Thanks for the suggestions and if anyone
finds more information I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know.

Thanks,

Yeah what your saying makes sense. I work in a computer repair shop so I
have access to the tools to save files off of the system. The funny thing
about this error is that I tried another repair install just for the fun of
it and I got the system to boot up. At that point none of the .exe files
would work so I did some research and found a couple commands to put in at
the command prompt and that fixed it. Restarted several times and did some
windows updates, then installed Norton Antivirus. Everything seems to be OK
now but I would still like any information anyone has on the error in case I
see it in the future.
