Windows XP Home - System Restore Problems

Hello -

On my computer is a freshly installed copy of Windows Home w/SP2 and all
current updates. A few apps installed.

I have errors (which appeared at the same time so I am assuming they are
related) stemming around System Restore:


Prob 1 -

Occurs when trying to click on Control Panel, SYSTEM, SYSTEM RESTORE...


Run DLL ERROR

An exception occurred while trying to run
"C:\WINDOWS\system\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL
"C:\windows\system32\sysdm.cpl",system"


Probe 2 & 3 -

When I try to go through Windows Help & Support, Undo Changes with System
Restore...


I get another error and the sending of the error report never gets a reply
like it should.


System Restore has encountered a problem and needs to close....


If I send the report I get no reply.

Start, Run, type: c:\windows\inf
in the INF folder, look for SR.INF (or sr)right-click on SR.INF and left
click on Install
insert the XP disk if prompted and it will reinstall system restore

Sysdm.cpl is the System control Panel Applet - and the controls of
System Restore are part of it. It is a Protected file. Look for it in
system32, right click and rename (eg sysdm.cp). In a few seconds it
will be replaced by a clean copy. Reboot to make sure that is the one
in use, then delete the renamed one.
