Windows XP Home Setup caught in the endless loop!

Ok,
the other day I made the mistake of downloading and installing MSN
Messenger. After using it for a day I decided it was no good so I
uninstalled it. Sadly, I started to get all these pop-up ads all the
time, and I figured they were related to MSN messenger somehow. I
tried to do everything I could to eradicate that program from my hard
drive, but the pop-ups persisted. (they were the ones that said "stop
pop-ups now!") anyway, I thought that if I reinstalled Windows XP it
might make everything better.

I put the CD in and it asked if I wanted to erase everything on my
hard drive or do an upgrade. I didn't want everything erase so I chose
upgrade, assuming it would just put all the files back into place that
were supposed to be there.

Halfway through the installation I get an error. The number for it is
"0x0000001D", I believe. I go to a black screen with text, explaining
that if this is the first time I am receiving this error, just let
setup restart. If this is the second time I should restart my
computer. So the first time I let it go and when the machine reboots
XP setup starts again. It starts the installation and gets to the same
point as last time and the error appears. So I reboot my computer
manually but it keeps happening. The error message suggests I reboot
my computer in safe mode. I do this by pressing f8, but when Windows
XP starts in safe mode I get an error message declaring, "Windows
Setup cannot run under Safe Mode... Now restarting". So it reboots
itself. No matter what happens, it always reboots and tries to
install, always fails on that one part, and reboots.

I don't think I've lost anything on my hard drive (I hope not, anyway)
but I want to know if there is some way of just getting out of the
Windows XP setup! I am sorry I even did it! I will find another way to
get rid of those pop-ups!! I'd rather have the annoying pop-ups than
no computer at all!

Please help!

(I am typing this from a friend's computer, in case you were wondering
how I got online!)

Thanks
