Windows XP Home problems after clean install

I performed a clean install (SP1a) by first uninstalling SP2 but I can't get
past the 'Windows XP Home Edition' screen when starting up my PC. This
happened right after trying to install some of the drivers (the clean install
worked well although I could not get the monitor past 800x600 resolution, so
I started re-installing the drivers, which I had to do anyway). All I get
after the 'windows' screen with the horizontal loading bar is a black screen
(windows doesn't seem to load anymore). I tried booting from a CD and nothing
(I don't know if my PC is configured to do so). How do I start over and clean
install again or fix this problem?

A "clean install" in my book is an installation onto a
freshly formatted hard disk. This means that you would
lose all data stored on the disk. Here is how it's done:

- Very early during the boot phase, press the key that
gets you into the BIOS setup. On many machines it is
the Delete key. On some machine it says on the screen
what key to press to get into setup. On others you have
to read the manual that came with your machine.
- In the BIOS menu, set your CD drive as the first boot
device. Normally it's the hard disk.
- Boot the machine from your WinXP CD.
- When prompted, allow the hard disk to be formatted.
- Continue with the WinXP setup process.
