The Windows Setup requires a previous versions Windows CD
to continue setup, which I do not have. Why can't I
install Windows without that? I did buy the full product
not an upgrade version so I do not understand at all.

lets say that you have windows 9x or windows 95 or any
windows me version now there is some hardware issue whcih
you might not have installed the device driver for it.
so for that case it's asking the old windows cd-rom
go to start> settings > control panel > system properties
find out whether there is any hardware with yellow
question mark means some problem is there install the
devicd properly and then re-run windows xp setup
also run start > run> sfc.exe c:\windows\sfc system file
checker to find wether any system file is missing or not.
