Windows XP Freezing & Locking Totally

Hi

My son got a virus last year & this problem has been
getting worse. It totally freezes & locks up. You cannot
use Task Manager to free anything. The only way is to
remove the power supply and restart. It is a Packard Bell
1.2 MHZ Celeron with 20 GB C:\ drive & 120 GB second
drive. Michael Solomon told me to update all the device
drivers which I have. I did the Graphics Card, Modem,
Mouse & send the Fault Bucket reports to him & he said to
remove & re-install Nortons AV. I have done all that & it
is still freezing. It seems to freeze in Menu's & Right
Clicking menus mostly. It does it at the most unexpected
time. I can have the thing running for 4 - 5 hours &
nothing. Then it will do it one after another for about
three times. It does it In Lotus Organiser, Internet
Explorer, The Start Menu & also Windows Explorer. All
programs in fact seem to have the same problem. I have
downloaded the XP Upgrade Advisor to check the files on
the machine. It says they are all there & passes the
test. I am going to throw it one day, it is becoming a
real lemon.

Hope you have some suggestions?

Thanks

PeterF

Pardon me for asking, but did you ever actually remove the virus?

Anti-virus software cannot successfully remove all viruses. If you know the
specific name of the virus, you can search the web sites of the major
antivirus writers to find removal instructions specific to the virus.

Moreover, some viruses leave behind lasting damage, even if removed.

It's also possible that the problems have another cause.

Hi Ted

It was quarenteened by Nortons AV. I have updated all the
required AV definitions. I have done the Online scans at
Symantec & also used Spybot to remove any Adware. It says
it has no viruses found & no Adware as I have Immunized.

The computer locked on me twice last night. I went to
Windows Update. Selected Custom Updates, It then does a
scan for about 15 - 30 sec's then freezes. The green scan
bars disappear.

I have re-installed Nortons AV from scratch.

It does it with all programs, I have been to Packard Bell
& got all the latest updates.

Hope you can help with this

Thanks

Start Button & it seems to have another Bar sitting
behind it. You can see it & it is overlapped by the front
one. Also when something is about to Freeze up, the Task
bar gives a Venetian Blind affect, with Horizontal lines
all the way along.
