Hi First time using the fourm, could i get help with this. XP will not start
up when i turn the computer on. It trys to start but after a few seconds it
tell me that windows failed to start up and asks me to restart normaly or
from last known good configuration. I tried entering on these lines but it
just keeps going over the same few seconds of startup and keeps giving me
these options. any help please.

Hi

Have you tried a System Restore via Safe Mode?

If none of those options give you access to Windows, you can try a 'Repair'
install of XP. Please see the following article by Michael Stevens:

Hi Sean

A 'Repair' install will leave your programs, settings and files intact.

Thanks Will, I feel better now about trying it, i have also just realized
that it was the first time i tried to use it since we had a power falure the
other evening, so i dont know if this means something else.
Many Thanks, Sean

Hi

A power failure could result in various failures - hardware and/or software.

Hi Will, Yes, i tried a few things from the link but i had to take it to the
shop, it was a hardware problem some of my data has been lost but the managed
to save most of it, Many thanks for your help and best wishes. Regards Sean.

I have a similar problem. Its stuck on the black screen asking what to start
in: Last Known.., safe, or Start Windows Normally. After trying all the
options, it still returns to this screen. I cannot get to a command prompt
and it wont read my re-install CD.

Any ideas?

Hi Azalea,
That was my problem as well, I tried all that and a few other things as well
with Will's help but to no avail.
I brought it to a repair shop yesterday and got it back this morning with
the damaged hard drive. The power cut had damaged the hard drive and they had
to fit a new one. I lost some of my data including e-mails and photos that I
had not backed up, so from now on i will be backing up everything. There
could be other reasons for this problem for Windows not starting up but in my
case it was hard drive damage.
Best wishes,
Sean.
