Windows XP download patches

I downloaded a bundle of recommended patches, but they
failed to install. What did I do wrong, or what
adjustments do I need to make with my system?

You didn't do anything wrong. This occasionally happens and is sometimes due
to the Microsoft update site. All you can really do is try downloading them
again and see what happens. I know it is a nuisance but there have been
times when i've downloaded up to three times before some updates have
finally installed correctly.
