windows xp doesn't remember my settings.

does anyone know why my setting aren't being set. for
example, when i stick a dvd or cd in and it asks which
program i want to run it and then gives you the option of
making that the default player for the given media type.
when i do this and i turn my computer off, those settings
are somehow forgotten because i get that same box each
and everytime i insert media such as a dvd or cd.

You can try going to Set Program Access & Defaults in the control panel (or
in you start menu if you opted to have it show as a link), click custom, and
make sure your preferences are indicated there.
