Windows XP does not read DVD

I have install Windows XP Professional in my PC but I'm not able to read any kind of DVD in my player. The model (recognized by the operating system) is LG DVD-ROM DRD8160B. I've tried to play two DVD that came from the IEEE Control System Society without success. I went to the special zone that maintain a list of the compatible vendor and I've checked the hardware and it was in the list
The driver comes from Microsoft and is dated at: 07/01/2001, version: 5.1.2535.0. The following drivers are installed in the computer

C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\cdrom.sys (Microsoft Corporation, 5.1.2600.1106 (xpsp1.020828-1920
C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\imapi.sy
C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\redbook.sy
C:\Windows\System32\storprop.dl

The hardware works apparently well because I've strip down the DVD player and plug into another PC running Windows XP where it worked perfectly well. I've suspected from the DVD but I tried them into a Macintosh and both were perfect
Any clues?

You have to have software such as PowerDVD or others installed to read a
DVD. XP does not include DVD software.

The DVD is not recognized by explorer. In addition my two
DVD only contain pdf files, nothing related with movies,
audio, animation or whatever similar.
You mean that when you open windows explorer, no dvd drive
is in the list?
Did you upgrade to XP, if so, from what?
Did you have burning software installed when/if you did?

Let us know please.
Thanks
Angus
