Windows XP Crashes to reboot

I have a recent problem since a new install on a new hard drive. When
opening a file .avi , .doc, or others my system crashes hard to a reboot.
This has also happened with various installations such as driver updates and
applications. Does anyone have any idea on what could be causing this? It
happens so fast that the windows error reporting does not catch the error.

There is a setting under
MyComputer/properties/advanced/startup&recovery........settings
under system failure...uncheck automatically restart.
doesn't stop the problem but at least now you will get an error message that you
can read and post here for specific help.
