Windows XP can't boot - hangs

Hi, I have a friend who's Win XP Pro hangs after it enters the blue screen(the screen showing the accounts on the computer). However, now only the XP logo appears and it hangs from there, no accounts nothing. We have tried to boot from safe mode, safe mode with command prompt, rebooting from last known good configuration, even inserted the XP disc to boot from it, but it just hangs at that screen. The computer does not have access to internet and the last time it was working it was properly shut down. What could be the problem? Is there any way to solve this without formatting? Thanks.

Sounds like a piece (or more) of hardware has been removed and XP needs to
be setup again.

I move an XP HDD from one PC to another, and because of the activation
""""""""""FEATURE""""""""" XP decided not to boot on the other PC. I moved
it back to the original drive, guess what?!

no hardware was added/removed and nothing was done to change the system since the last time it was working.

Try resetting the BIOS back to default settings. You might have to reload XP
from the CD, but I suppose that will reset all your installed applications.

we have just tried repair installation. everything went well during setup. however when it rebooted it hangs at the same place again.

This sounds as if you have a nasty worm that is getting loaded from the
run axis (and continues to be if you do a repair reinstall, that leaves
those entries alone). Short of a format and reinstall, this must be a
guess. But try
Set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard Disk. Boot the XP CD and, instead
of Setup, take the immediate R for Repair. Assume any password
requested is blank, and TAB over.

Use the Expand command to
expand x:\i386\lsass.ex_ C:\Windows\System32\lsass.exe
where x is the CD drive letter and
del C:\windows\system32\bridge.dll
(and from windows as well in case it landed there).

Then try booting with the F8 key immediately into Safe Mode and there
run AV and Adaware with latest updates

hi again, i do not quite understand the EXPAND part.
'Use the Expand command to
expand x:\i386\lsass.ex_ C:\Windows\System32\lsass.exe
where x is the CD drive letter and
del C:\windows\system32\bridge.dll
(and from windows as well in case it landed there).'
am i suppose to expand x:\i386\lsass.ex_C:\Windows... or just x:\i386\lsass.ex_?then what's that about the C:\Windows... part?
and what happens after i expand the file? and if i del the bridge.dll wont it cause windows not to boot up properly too since that is a windows file?
sorry for all the trouble. thanks so much!

Type in that full
expand x:\i386\lsass.ex_ C:\Windows\System32\lsass.exe

replacing x with your CD drive letter (which I don't know)
which is saying 'expand the compressed file lsass.ex_ from the i386
folder on the CD and put the decompressed file in C:\Windows\System32
calling it lsass.exe'

oh well. thanks for all your help. but it seems that nothing we do is reviving the machine, when we tried the 'expand' command it kept saying that file lsass.exe cannot be created. we really have no idea what to do anymore except to reinstall everything. we appreciate all help provided to us!
