Windows XP Boot Problem

When I turn on the computer it will boot up to the point that is says that
windows is loading and then it just sits there. After a while, I can hit
the space bar and it will go ahead to the welcome screen and finish booting
up. Whether the space bar has anything to do with it finishing booting up
or not I don't know. It could be that I just get impatient at about the
same time every time and it might boot up anyway. My question is, what do I
need to do to make it boot up as it should? As to further info, I have just
cleaned this machine of many viruses, trojans, and spyware for a friend.
The boot up behaved this way before the cleaning and is still behaving this
way. As to what I have done today, I installed EZ Armour firewall and
anti-virus, which needless to say, it did not have any. I then ran stinger
(both normal and safe mode), CW shredder, Trend Micro House call virus scan,
McAfee anti-virus and security online scan, Adaware, EZ Armour scan numerous
times (both normal and safe mode). It has finally come up clean, I then ran
chkdsk and defrag. I have disabled all items on start up tab in msconfig,
rebooted, and disconnected internet connection and disconnected all
peripherals. I am now in the process of installing SP2 from the CD and then
I am going to download all Windows Updates. Is there anything else I need
to do? Thanks in advance for your help.
