I'll turn it off and come back in an hour and the thing
has turned itself on. Any ideas. Please reply via email
too. Thanks

Go into your bios and turn off: wake on lan or wake on ring. This has
nothing to do with xp.

I don't reply by email.
Go into the BIOS of your computer and look for a feature called "Wake on
LAN, Wake on Ring" or something similar. Disable this feature. With it
enabled a phone call will turn the computer on.

I'm not at my XP box right now, and this workstation doesn't have a
modem, but I'm almost positive that when I installed XP fax I set the
fax/modem to wake on ring without going into the bios. I think there was
an box to check in the modem driver properties tab to the effect of
"Allow this device to wake the system from standby "
