Automatic configuring of a new computer

Sorry to post a Window 8 question here, but I can't find a W8 (or a win8
or a Windows8) newsgroup.

I gave my sister an HP laptop for Christmas. When it was booted for the
very first time, it automatically started configuring itself. At first,
it asked for routine things like her name. But then it wanted to set up
an internet connection and asked for an email address and some technical
details that we didn't have. I couldn't figure how to break free of the
setup to get to the desktop. Pressing ESC did not stop the setup and I
don't think I was able to get Task Manager. Without getting to the
desktop, I never got the taskbar and couldn't do an orderly shutdown via
Start/Turn Off Computer/Turn Off. Only way to shut down was to press the
Power button for several seconds.

What other things could I have tried?

Thanks,

Look carefully for a "local account" option.

Once you click "local account", you can enter your choice of username/password.

If you want a Microsoft account, you can apparently add that later.

Some USENET servers (AIOE and Eternal-September) offer:

alt.comp.os.windows-8

Only problem with this setup, is that Google has no
mechanism to recognize the new groups. So no archive
exists of it. It's just like the old days, before dejanews.

Watch the screen closer and read ALL of it. There are skips and bypasses all
along the way there, or should be. You don't have to already have e-mail
accounts, newsgroups,,, and several other things to get thru the setup
process.
Read carefully.

I don't remember seeing either of those screenshots. Too bad my sister
lives 66 miles from me, and I can't try the various suggestions as they
appear.

All I distinctly remember seeing is the Back button when I got to the
point that I couldn't provide the info required. Maybe I did miss
something in smaller type.
