Do something wild and crazy: uninstall the trial version and then
install 97.

All Microsoft products "seems" to always work together. Office 97,
while not originally written for XP, it will work in XP. However, all
support for Office 97 has been discontinued of several year now.

I have Office 97 running on an old Dell Inspiron 1000 with XP and it
operates fine, has the Office tool bar off to the right side of the
screen, etc. We have minimal use for Office, except for the Word
portion, but other than that, no problems whatsoever.

For a while I had both Office 97 and Office 2002 (Office XP)
running on Windows XP. Had to migrate an old Access 97
database over to Access 2002.

Office 97 will run in Windows XP and can be made to run in Vista under
Windows XP compatibility mode. However you will have problems if ever
working on documents created in newer versions of Office. Mainstream support
of this product was retired in 2004. (which if you ar e just using for
creating your own documents then probably is fine)

Although the changes in Office 2007 are significant if you take some time to
learn the interface you may find it a major improvement over previous
versions. (at least I have)

However if the cost of upgrade is a problem, then you can try the free
OpenOffice. The interface is more similar to older versions of Office, but
can still work with the newer file formats.

The only such issue that I'm aware of is with Office 2007 documents,
not with all "documents created in newer versions of Office."

And even with Office 2007 documents, there isn't necessarily a
problem. Word 2007, for example, by default, creates .docx files,
rather than the .doc files that Word 97 can read. However, it *can*
create .doc files if you simply tell it to do so.

Yes I should have added the clarification. The formats are almost 100%
backwards compatible and for generally referred to as the Office 97 - 2003
document format. (or Office 97 - 2007 binary file format)

However there were minor additions in Word 2003 such as style locking (which
means the style cannot be used in the document)

Annotation reference descriptors were added in Word 2000 and updated in Word
2002

However pretty minor and most documents aren't using this in any case.

I'm not sure about the other office document formats...

(as per Microsoft Office Word 97 - 2007 Binary File Format Specification
(*.doc)

Malcolm.
