kraut

Was going to get new system with Vista but after using daughters Vista
system decided to install the copy of XP Home I got on my box I have
with 98se and was wondering what the basic requirements are for it.

Am running 98se on a system with AMD-K6(tm) 3D processor 333 MHz, 512
MB memory, 6.03 GB, 487 MB hard drive about half full now.

I basically use system for geneology, the internet and for MS Office.
Am not a gamers, nor into graphics or video.

While you have enough memory on your system for WinXP, your
CPU is far too slow and your disk is too small. Don't even try to
install WinXP - you will be sadly disappointed with its performance.

It's still going to hurt with that processor and HDD space.
I would stick with Windows 98 on that machine with those specs.

512 RAM looks good, I ran XP Pro for many years on a mchine maxed out at
384.
333 MHz processor is better than minimum, I ran with 450.
6.03 GB might be kind of small, I ran with a 10 GB drive and it was always
filling up

Will be fairly slow with that processor....

512 MB memory,

RAM's OK......
6.03 GB, 487 MB hard drive about half full now.

You'll be pretty pushed on this HDD size - it /can/ be done but you will
have to be VERY disciplined on cleaning up temp files etc etc...

Thanks all for the replies. Think for now that I will stick with my
98se box since it does everything I want for now. I was just thinking
about going to XP Home for the MS Updates / support.

Thanks again.

I have a Gateway 400 MHz P2 with 512 MB of Memory and a 30GB hard drive and
it runs fine. I did a clean install which helps also.

I placed XP on a similar computer and it worked fine. I found XP much more
stable than 98se. Sure, it might be a tad slower, but you obviously are not
obsessed with speed. I would get a larger hard drive though.

Am running 98se on a system with AMD-K6(tm) 3D processor 333 MHz,

That CPU meets the official minimum requirements, but performance will be
slow. However if you don't run demanding applications, you may find it at
least usable.

My wife ran Windows XP on a similar box--400MHz with only 256MB of RAM--for
several years. It was slow, but her needs were slight, and she found it
acceptable. Even though your processor is a little slower than hers was,
with your extra RAM, your performance might be somewhat better.

512 MB memory,

That should be fine, especially considering the applications you say you
run.

6.03 GB, 487 MB hard drive about half full now.

I'm confused here. Is it 6.03GB or 487MB? If it's 487MB, you can't even
consider XP. It won't even load on such a small drive. With 6.03GB, you can
do it, but you will have very little space to add any additional
applications or data files.

However, you can easily add a second drive, and don't need to spend a lot of
money for one. Even a 40GB drive (which is very small) will keep you going
for a while, and they can be bought for as little as $30 US or so. If you
look around, you may even be able to find a good used drive for less.

Please reply to the newsgroup

Hard drive size is 6.48 GB. I just copied the size that Nortons
system credentials showed as 6.03 GB, 487 MB which I did not noticed.
No idea what the 487 MB is for. As stated I am not really into
computers. Just mainly use the above programs and the defrag for
Nortons which the kids put on here for me.

As stated earlier think I will stay with what I have for now.

TIA
