Windows XP and MS Backup

Greg Michael

Hello.

I'm hoping that someone here will have some insight as to my problem. I
recently moved, and during the move, my primary hard drive died. I had
backups of the drive using MS backup on a regularly scheduled time. No big
concern, right?

Apparently not.

I have been able to install my copy of Win XP on the new HDD, and then I run
the MS Backup to restore from the backup files I have on one of the other
drives from the machine. When I restore the System State backup, and then
reboot, I get a BSOD just after seeing the splash screen. The stop error is a
0x7b error. I have tried using the recovery console to run FixMBR and
Fixboot, but neither have worked. I'm really stuck, because I can't seem to
find what is causing the problem.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!
Greg

Good news and bad news. You might be able to fix, and you might not!

Good Luck.

Unfortunately, that is one article that I am all too familiar with so far.
I'm starting to do a file by file comparison between the vanilla install, and
my System State backup to see if there's a glaring difference in the boot.ini
or other informational file that might help.
