Windows xp 64

My HP computer Pavilion 530N has a 64 bit processor. We had Windows XP Home
edition installed as our operating system. It now hangs during startup and we
haven't been able to figure out why. We don't have a CD for windows as it
came already installed when we bought it. Would it be a good idea to
download the new XP 64 package and just do a virgin install of that? If so,
can I download using my P4 sony computer and then take the downloaded media
to the HP to do the install? I'm hoping to be able to fix this myself rather
than having to pay a professional to fix the problem, but my wife needs her
computer and data back quickly and I'm not sure how long it will take me to
do this. Thanks for your help

Your HP has recovery options. Read the manual to learn how to access them
(usually by pressing F-10 at startup.)

There is nowhere to legally download XP 64bit other than a trial version. 64
bit is not recommended for the casual user since you will have to hunt down
compatible drivers for most of your hardware.

Before you do anything you need to copy your wife's data to another
storgae device. DO NOT try any of HPs restore/recovery options untill
you have done this, making the wrong choice could mean the loss of her
data.

Options :-

1. remove the HDD and place it in another PC as slave and copy the data
over to the other PC or CDs etc.

2. Obtain a live CD such as Knoppix ( http://www.knoppix.org/ ) or the
Ultimate Boot CD for Windows ( http://www.ubcd4win.com/ ), attach a USB
key or external HDD to your machine and boot the live CD, copy the data
to the USB device.

3. Take the macine to a professional and have them back up the data
BEFORE repairing the machine.
