Microsoft makes device drivers only for those hardware devices that
they themselves manufacturer. All other device drivers must be provided
by the each device's manufacturer for testing an possible inclusion in
the OS installation package.

Contact Intel to obtain drivers for Intel's product.

Allready did that (Contacted Intel).
But they are very silent and apparently not responding questions from a dum
ass like me, so I hoped for some answers from MS.
I mean MS allready did a standard SATA driver on the Windows XP Pro
installation CD.
Therefore I thought that it might be the same situation for the 64-Bit
version.

It's more likely that Intel simply hasn't bothered to delevop drivers
for an OS that's still in beta testing and that won't be released as
anything but an OEM version when it is ready, anyway.

If Microsoft already had the standard SATA driver, they'd have included
it, but they can hardly include something that the manufacturer has yet
to provide. Again, Microsoft doesn't develop/produce drivers for any
hardware devices not of their own manufacture. Microsoft does allow
other manufacturers to provide strip-down versions of their own drivers
for delivery via Windows Installation CDs and via Windows Update.

howdy,

i was in a similar situation as you about a month ago, in january.

i have a dell server with xeon 3.0 EM64T and intel E7520 chipset.

I had a dog of a time trying to get my onboard intel pro/1000 MT server
adapter NIC driver, none of the microsoft or intel drivers worked. everything
else seemed to be fine, but what good is no networking huh?

but a good post at the newsgroup below, helped me to find a working beta
from compaq that did the trick like magic!

I called and emailed Dell, Intel, and MS support and they were all pretty
much blowing it off as beta, with no real solution. gotta stick to the users
at the newsgroups for this kinda answers.

my winxp 64 built in drivers do support my onboard SATA, but i too wanted to
see if there was a intel chipset package specific for x64 and there was on
the intel web site. it fixed a usb controller problem in device manager for
me, that wasnt working with the microsoft xp x64 default drivers.

so see if they have one for your chipset:
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/support_intel.asp
http://support.intel.com/support/motherboards/workstation/

it seems that intel is focusing on the itanium and was excluding my xeon
from a lot of x64 drivers.

otherwise, post your situation at the microsoft discussion:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/64bit/x64/trial/support.mspx

you can find my posts there by searching the From line: wewa

make sure to load antivirus ASAP, as one of my posts will reflect.
clamwin.com is good.

good luck!
