windows wont start up

Hi - I have a HP lap top (1 yr old)-I turned on the LT and instead of
starting up, the screen is black with white letters saying something like
this: "We appologize for the inconvenience but windows did not start
sucessfully", this could be due to a "recent hardware of software change,"
etc. I tried getting into safe mode>and it repeated the same thing.Tried'
last known config.>same thing. I even clicked f8 several times and tried to
get into safemode or reg mode that way, but it only is trying to start up;
In a flash I see a blue screen & also see the HP and windows screen, but it
goes to the same "we appologize etc screen.
Let me add that anything I select makes it look like it is starting up in
safemode >all these words are filling up the screen like its getting
scanned.
I hope that i am making sence. I disconnected the battery and am now
draining it to see if it helps. So in 1-2 hours, the LT will be totally
drained from power and maybe it will be refreshed.I can only hope you have
some things for me to try in the meantime.

I may add too that I have antivirus, adaware, and had used my LT earlier
this morning breieftly. I keep it as clean as possible from spyware, and
viruses (which i dont think i have ever had an infection of a virus yet
since I have had it)
windows xp home/AVG/windows firewall/spyware blaster-spyware guard/
I will thank you in advance. :)

Hello,

Select 'Start Windows Normally' and *quickly* hit F8.

If you got the timing right, you should see another menu. If there is only
one option in that menu, hit F8 again.

In this menu select 'disable automatic restart on system failure', Enter,
Enter and you should be able to view the full blue screen error.

Post the message here and we will be able to help you better.

For the Unmountable_Boot_Volume error:

Boot with XP cd into Recovery Console.
Do chkdsk /p

If there are errors, do chkdsk /r

After Chkdsk is finished in either case, go back into Recovery Console
and do fixboot, and then reboot (hopefully) into Windows.

Hi all and Malke,
I did all the steps you suggested EXCEPT fixboot (got scared cause it talked
about a partition etc)-Anyways, I figured I could reboot and if it doesnt
work, will do the fixboot part as well. Well, happy to say that I didnt need
to do the fixboot after all. Before I restarted, I removed the cd from the
drive and sure enough, my usual startup resumed. TYped in my password and
saw my desktop as usual.
thank you for your help. But why did this happen. the only thing i can think
of that I installed recently was windows updates. well, glad this worked.
thanks all & Malke

I don't know why it happened. Just keep backing up your data regularly. ;-)

Glad you got it sorted. Thanks for taking the time to let us know.
