Hello to all: I am having the very same problem with the home computer after
a Spybot scan....I feel the pain...and it's sometimes NOT nice to share. I
have posted a question on a Microsoft chat board so if I hear something I'll
Post. Will also stop and get the FIX-IT if I can find it in rural America on
the 4th weekend.

Sam's Club had it too, so check there. I imagine most office supply stores
may have it, but call first - I got the last copy!

Off to give it a try. Good luck!

Yes, I just did an update from Spybot & a scan. I don't remember all it
found...I can't get in.

FYI - Joanne, I noticed you had just done a Spybot update and run before you
shut down. My husband confirms he did the same thing. I've just went over
to Spybot.info and sent them a message, asking if maybe there was something
in their update causing this issue.

SlmJon - did you do the same???

I'll let ya'll know if and when I hear anything from then. Means another
trip to the library later I guess.

Nass, what happens (as you've hinted with your warning) if you use non XP
disks? I no longer have my XP disks (damaged) but do have older, Microsoft
98 disks. Can I use these to give it a try? Typing this from the library
right now - still not able to get on at home - can't even get F8 to let me
access safe mode. Still frustrated.

As I['m traveling, I don't have disks with me. However, my fiance has his.

We were able to get to the VAIO restore option, but that would wipe out all
my files/data/mail, etc. CANNOT lose that stuff!

Mopeyone - I did try the restore from safe mode, but it didn't work - put me
right back in the damn loop. :-(

Wondering if using his disks will give us the option of not losing personal
data.....

Joanne,
Try the Recovery console with your Fiance disk ( I hope it is the same disk)
and try the command:
chkdsk /R

Chkdsk
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb491051.aspx
BTW using Recovery console will not make you lose your data but still no
gaurantee!
HTH.

Okay, so I put the disk in and made sure to have my BIOS set to boot from CD,
and rebooted several times. I get the opening helicopter screen from Fix-it
saying "loading" then a little noise from my CD drive, then - nothing. Black
screen and silence. Am I doomed? How long did it take for you fix to scan
your system, Joanne? It says in the manuel 15-30 seconds.... I'm well past
that now (typing on my office laptop now - thank god I remembered I could
borrow it!). Any advice? Anyone??

Hey Guys,

I've downloaded the file to run to fix this mess but when I get to the
registry patrh, it won't take windows/system32/config or
winnt/system32/config. Of course I can't get into the system to see why my
registry path is different. Any ideas??? I have a Dell Inspiron8600 running
Windows XP.

Well, congrats, good job!!

Spy Bot Search & D... I've used it for years without problems but, exactly
the same thing happened to me, as you saw in "Logged out immediately". Now
I've used the recovery cd and have installed/repaired XP again. But I can't
restore it like you could. At least I managed to copy all files, before, but
still it's a drag..

I guess SpyBot S&D has written somthing about the hazards of deleting all
found probs, in their "tutorial". We can probably just blame ourselves for
not reading it properly.

SimJon -

We couldn't fix it either, with the suggested remedies, which is why we
bought the software I mentioned - Fix-It Utilities 8.0 by Avanquest. It has
a lot of other useful features. With the disk, the fix was very fast and
easy.

TA-DA - I'm In, TOO!! Everyone, keep following the posts over at Spybot
under the link Joanne has posted here. We are either getting in with
Spybot's solution "Method #2" (as I did) or with the Fix-It software. Now
the cleanup for some of us begins. Good luck everyone!!!!!!!!!! What a way
to meet... :)

SlmJon - Fix-It didn't work for me, but Spybot's solution "Method #2" did.
I'm not technologically savvy, but somehow I entered all the right answers
and got in. Don't remember if you are now following the Spybot discussion
threads on this issue or not, but if not, please see Joanne's link she's
posted somewhere here, and start following the discussions over there. Many
more solutions are being offered, including better explanations for
variations on the command prompts. I don't begin to say that I understand it
all, but hope something they've mentioned will work for you - and all
involved with this mess. Keep trying!

Joanne and all who posted: THANKS FOR THE INFO: Fix-it was the answer! It
took me some messing around to get the bios set up and get the right disk
drive (have a dvd/rom and a seperate cd/rw drive) selected. Once it ran I
was back in business. The wife is happy to have her computer back, I have
gotten a valuable tool and some HANDS-ON training and the computer has had a
good tune-up. I thank you all for the help.
