Windows will not update

I'm having trouble getting windows to update. Everytime I do, I install the
windows validation and then get error 0x8DDD0004.

I'm running windows xp home edition with sp3; IE 8.

In the control panel under security center automatic updates says check
settings with a tab to click on to 'turn on automatic updates'. When I click
on that it says to turn it on through the 'system tab'. When I go to 'system'
there is no automatic updates tab.

I've tried the windows update agent and get error 0x80070420.

Some of my other programs seem to have trouble updating like McAffe security
and apple itunes

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

The computer seems to be working fine other than that

When accessing the Update site, you receive the 0x8ddd0004 error

Also make sure you accepted the Microsoft Trust Certificate

1. In Control Panel, open Add or Remove Programs
2. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
3. Select the Update Root Certificates check box.
4. Click Next, and then click Finish.

There is a very good chance that you are seeing the effects of a hijackware
infection!

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

(only!) in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:

I've tried those fixes and they don't seem to work. The onecare won't even
install.

Set your Explorer Views to include Hidden, System & Protected. Then
explore to \Windows\Downloaded Program Files. Set the View to details -
if any entries are shown as "Unknown" or "Damaged" in the Status column
Right Click each one and choose Remove.

Thanks R. McCarty. Everything in that folder seems to be 'OK'. It just says
everything is installed.

I checked the services file; and it says windows update is starting. I
wonder how i get it to started?
