Windows Security Center is not working

A

Alex Levi

I was probably infected by some sort of a virus.
When I deleted it (at least I think I am) I'm getting Windows Security Alert
icon on my task bar, telling me that my Automatic Updates is turned off.

When I click on "Turn on Automatic Updates" in the Security Center, I'm
getting the following error:
"We're sorry. The Security Center could not change your Automatic Update
settings. To try changing these settings yourself, go to System in Control
Panel. On the Automatic Updates tab, select Automatic (recommended), and then
click OK."

When I change these settings manually in the control panel, nothing happens
and the Alert Icon is still there.

How can I fix this problem ?
Can I reinstall just the files needed for automatic update ?

Thanks!

Alex,

*Right* click My Computer either on the Desktop or the Start Menu and
choose Manage.
In the left frame, click the plus sign next to Services and Applications
Now click on Services
Double click on Automatic Updates in the right frame
Is the Startup type set to Automatic ? If not, set it to that.
If the service is not running click on the Start button.
If you get a 1058 error message, than the system is most likely still
infected with a malware known as Vundo\Virtumonde. Current variants of
this malware are acompanied by a rootkit-like component.

You can try having the system scanned here as other afflicted Users have
report success in having the malware removed by it:

IF that does not remove the malware, then suggest you post to a
reputable anti-malware forum for assistance. Please read the guidelines
of the forum of your choice prior to posting there:

IF no malware is present, than see:

You cannot manually start the Automatic Updates service and you receive
an "Error 1058" error message on a computer that is running Windows XP
or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005

"Could not start the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service. Error 1058"
