Windows validation tool fails to install

Bill

Every time I am notified that there are updates pending for my Win XP
Pro SP2 Windows update tries to install the Windows Genuine Advantage
Validation tool and every time the installation fails. The installation
log says to go to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=39157 for help
and support. This link provides no help or support of any kind (it is
all marketing speak). The only thing this page lets me do is click a
Validate button which always works.

The problem is that I cannot download any updates because the Windows
Update version of the validation tool always fails to install and that,
apparently, stops the update process.

Note that I am running the OEM version of XP Pro that came with my Dell
laptop.

Is there any place to get some real help to fix this? Thanks.

Hi Bill,

Download the updated WGA diagnostic tool at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 to fix the permissions
problem with the registry, run it, then return to windows update. The
validation tool should install properly.

My apologies for posting both here and in the general newsgroup. I
posted there the realized that this is probably a more appropriate
group. Let me know where you want to continut the thread.

I downloaded WGADiag2.exe and ran, clicked on all of the tabs then
exited. I ran Windows Update again and the validation tool still fails
to install.

Is there something I should have done besides run WGADiag2.exe and exit?

If this is a registry permissions problem, are instructions available
for fixing the problem manually? I am logged in a a member of the
Administrators group when I run Windows Update.

Thanks for your help.

It wanted to install Windows Genuine Advantage the first time Tuesday, for me.
I clicked `decline' since it seemed to be all happy-speak hype, but as far as I
know the rest of the updates worked fine.
