Windows validation tool will not install.

Every time I am notified that there are updates pending for my Win XP
Pro SP2 Windows update tries to install the Windows Genuine Advantage
Validation tool and every time the installation fails. The installation
log says to go to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=39157 for help
and support. This link provides no help or support of any kind (it is
all marketing speak). The only thing this page lets me do is click a
Validate button which always works.

The problem is that I cannot download any updates because the Windows
Update version of the validation tool always fails to install and that,
apparently, stops the update process.

Note that I am running the OEM version of XP Pro that came with my Dell
laptop.

Is there any place to get some real help to fix this? Thanks.

Dell - sounds like an "invalid" copy of XP.

It also mightn't be a bad idea to download Belarc Advisor from
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html - when you run this it will
give you the key of the version that's installed on your 'puter

Download the updated WGA diagnostic tool at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 to fix the permissions
problem with the registry, run it, then return to windows update. The
validation tool should install properly.

I downloaded WGADiag2.exe and ran, clicked on all of the tabs then
exited. I ran Windows Update again and the validation tool still fails
to install.

Is there something I should have done besides run WGADiag2.exe and exit?

If this is a registry permissions problem, are instructions available
for fixing the problem manually? I am logged in a a member of the
Administrators group when I run Windows Update.

Thanks for your help.

These permissions can be repaired using Registry Editor as follows:

1. Click Start, and then click Run
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK
3. Expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
4. Locate the subkey HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\LegitCheckControl.LegitCheck
5. Right-click the subkey and select Permissions….
6. Ensure that Administrators allowed Full Control permission
7. Repeat steps 3-6 for the subkey
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\LegitCheckControl.LegitCheck.1

(Hat tip to Robin Walker who orginally posted this fix.)

That fixed the problem. Thanks very much.

I followed these steps and both permissions are set to FULL CONTROL,
but the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool still will not
install, even though it is downloaded. Same symptoms as the original
poster....

I am running IE7 Beta 2 Preview if that makes any
difference....anything else to try?
