Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool crashes IE

I've just installed Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool and
every time I press the "express" or "custom" button on the Windows
Update page IE crashes.

I had a similar problem with a previous version of Windows Validation
Tool when I tried to download Windows AntiSpyware but I was able to
get around the crash by using an alternative validation method.
However, no alternative validation method is offered for Windows
Update.

Please help.

Thanks.

What was the error message? Need more info than just "crashes".

Right click on "My Computer" and select Manage.
Expand the Event Viewer category and look through each of the three
sub-categories for the red flagged error records relating to the Validation Tool. Double click
on an error record to see the details of the error, and post back with the exact error message.

I've just created another crash and the error message is as follows:

Source: Application Error
Category: None
Type: Error
Event ID: 1000
Description: Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180,
faulting module crypt32.dll, version 5.131.2600.2180, fault address
0x00009eb1.

There is another error message time-stamped 2 minutes after the one
above:

Source: Application Error
Category: None
Type: Error
Event ID: 1001
Description: Fault bucket 134116947.

Thanks.

I seem to vaguely recall an issue with nvidia drivers being involved
with this.

Try this thread

Any help?

Have your WinXP CD handy...
Click Start -> Run -> cmd

type in:

sfc /scannow

When it's done, reboot, then Click Start -> Run -> chkdsk /r

When it's done, reboot, and then defrag.

See jonah's reply about your Nvidia drivers too.
