The second half of may earlier problem:

I went through the validation / diagnostic process and got this:

Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Results

Passed Active scripting allowed
Passed Display images enabled
Passed Computer time and date correct
Passed ActiveX enabled
Failed Microsoft ActiveX controls loading

When I try to load the MS Genuine Advantage Validation Tool from
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/ww/windows/validation_xp.mspx?cc=ww,

nothing happens, the activex info bar does not display.

I guarantee that my copy of XP is not pirated.

What can be done?

Every time I go to a MS 'specific file' download page, and click the
'download' button, I get a little pop-up kind of a window and a 'server not
found' message.

This, I must say, really ticks me off, b/c this has always been my preferred
method of downloading MS updates etc. ' I have to think that this behavior
is somehow related to the inability to see the info bar when I try to
install the validation tool...possible?

Thanks for responding, but I've been there, done that--it's why I posted
this thread. I can't get past the MS activex part of the test...
