Trying to download and install Windows Updates but with
my dial-up connection (tesco.net) I can't stay connected
for long enough to download and install the larger
files. How can I get around this?

Hello Alexandra,
First, always take a very few or even one update in any one single session. It's a pain, but safer way. You actually need the connection during the download phase, and not during install phase.
In any event, for dialup users ( and others) I'd suggest Internet Download Manager program. It's home page is at
www.internetdownloadmanager.com

IDM is ideal for downloading the "big" files whether you are on dialup or on broadband.
It will actually manage to resume a disconnect by doing a redial & resuming from where it was.

You can (should) also set it so that it is not always present (loaded) once you are done with "big transfers". HTH
