Windows Updates problem

Why's that after i downloaded windows service pack my file system got corrupted, my desktop items just gone left only wallpaper and that's it, not even start bar was there so i had to reformat my computer. I visited the microsoft forum and there're some ppl having the same problem. Now i'm a bit afraid when come to downloading windows updates and/or service pack. Can someone tell me what's going on

Possibly a bad download or conflict with other running applications.

Why does KB828741 keep downloading to my compuer under automatic download it has done this seven times
