windows updates - lost sound - Dell computer

I have a Dell computer running Windows XP Home edition.
Every time I accept the automatic updates from Windows
something goes wrong with my computer. I have not even
installed the SP2 updates because I haven't resolved the
last problems. I have spent hours and hours with Dell.
Their only solution is to wipe the harddrive clean and
return to factory settings. I can't see how this will
help because I will still have to get the updates for
Windows XP!
My computer tells me that all devices including sound are
working properly. I still have no sound. Any ideas?? I
have checked speakers and everything else. This happened
immediately after installing updates.
I do hear the modem dialing!!! But that's all.
Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Right click my Computer and select Manage
Under Services and Applications select Services
Scroll down to Windows Audio and make sure it is set to AUTOMATIC
