Windows updates hangs, Installer never starts

When I do a windows update, the update completely
download but then the installation process stalls (or
never starts). Screen Shows installing but it never
reaches 1%. I was successful in installing XP service
Pack 1a but can't seem to get any of the windows updates
to work via the windows update site. Anyone have any
sugggestons. Using XP Pro.
