windows update went wrong

I started to go on windows update about two days ago now and the day after my
computer seemed to go completly wrong. I logged onto my file and things where
missing from the display menu and from the start menu. The apperance of the
box's seem different aswell- I have tried to change them to windows xp style
but they still seem on the 'classic' style. Also some of the files that i had
originally downloaded have now seemed to uninstall themselves..but i didnt
uninstall them. For example I downloaded windows media player 10 quite a
while ago, now when i click on it it comes up with the install screen but I
can't install it? whats going on? I have no idea what to do and its really
frustraiting me!! please help me!

Show updates in Add/Remove - If you are running Windows XP Service Pack 2, select the Show updates check box (at the top of the
list), Then you can remove whatever fails to work on your system.
