Windows update sp2

I gaily clicked on the windows update that I was told were ready for my for
my somewhat old laptop. Disaster. The start up tool bar has disintegrated,
most of the programmes like system restore, tools etc are corrupted and now I
cannot even reinstall my ethernet device. I have masses of vital information
and documents that i cannot access. This is a total disaster - what can I
do?

Get a decent technician to recover important data from your drive.. if it is
placed on a CD, it will be a useful backup for the future.. after completing
this, do a repair or clean install..
