Windows Update Security Patch

J

Jen

I have my computer to automatically do the Windows
Updates. Several times a week, it informs me that I have
new updates to install. It is the 811493 Security Update.
I have gone to the actual Windows Update site a couple of
times as well, and it is always there to be downloaded
also. I have downloaded it myself, and with the auto Win.
Update, and it tells me successful each time, even in the
installation history. This doesn't seem normal to me. Is
it? Is this 811493 patch just constantly changing, but
retaining the same name? Or, do I have some sort of bug?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Jen

Jen,

Thanks for your post. I gather you are running Windows XP
SP1 as I am. I am having the same problem. I have a
suspicion that the 811493 security update re-installs after
each virus update from Symantec. Very annoying. I hope
someone from Microsoft or Symantec read this thread and
address this issue.

Uninstalled Symantec and installed McAfee. Still getting
auto-updates for 811493. Does Microsoft monitor this board?

They must also be aware that someone is lifting email
addresses from this board and sending this bogus/malicious
q524566.exe update email, supposedly from technet.msdn.com.

No coincidence, I left my email address here yesterday, got
the bogus email today (like many others on this board
wondering what it is). Again, does Microsoft monitor this
board?

Maybe they should shut it down because it's doing more harm
than good?
