Windows Update Problem

Using WinXP, trying to access Windows Update site, I get the message
below. Other
info is .....

-There's only one user on this computer, who *is* a member of the
Administrator's group.
The account "Administrator" does not show up in User Accounts, but
when I try to create it, the system says the account already exists.

-This happened after I reinstalled Windows on this computer.

Help appreciated ....

Are you running WinXP Pro or WinXP Home, Gus?
This happened after I reinstalled Windows on this computer.

What problems were you having that you thought a "reinstall" would resolve?

Did you do a Repair Install or did you format and do a clean install?

Did you use the CDs that came with the machine or the hidden Recovery
Partition to do the "reinstall" or did you use CDs that came with a
different computer?

Is the computer in question the one that you "inherited" earlier this year?

Gus,
the 'Administrator' account is, by default, hidden from view, either
on the 'Welcome Screen' OR in 'User Accounts' in 'Control Panel'.

I'm not too sure how to 'unhide' the Admin account in Windows, but know that
it can be done simply by using the [free] util : TweakUI.exe (for XP from
Microsoft).

You can simply download it here :

http://download.microsoft.com/downl...a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

....or go to the Microsoft Powertoy's page at :

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/Downloads/powertoys/Xppowertoys.mspx

....and copy the program to your c:\windows\system32 directory. Create a
link (shortcut) to the file on your desktop.

Open TweakUI and navigate to 'Logon' in the left-hand pane. Then 'check
mark' the box marked : "Show 'Administrator' on Welcome screen" and press
on the [OK] button to apply and exit.

If you then open up 'User Accounts' again, you should see 'Administrator'
listed straight away. Reboot, and the added user 'Administrator' will also
appear on the Welcome screen.

Gus,
Sorry, the download "TweakUI.exe" (same link) is now a 'setup' file
that will automatically install the file to that directory, and also, create
a shortcut for you on your 'Start menu' - so that you don't have to do this
manually anymore.
