windows update notification shield

I have windows automatic update set to notify me but to not auto download or
install. The yellow update shield is visible in the taskbar indicating their
are updates. When I hover over it with my mouse it states download updates
0%. I try to double click on it to take me to the update site but nothing
happens. So my questions are - why does it show downloading updates at 0%
when I've set auto upate to notify me but not to download? and why when I
double click on the shield nothing happens?

I'm running windows media center [new computer] - I can't recall my old
computer acting this way [xp pro]

Thanks

Sounds like the message is simply saying YOU haven't downloaded the
available updates. As far as getting update to work, why not just click
Start, and then Windows Update?

I had the same problem with a computer using Windows XP Professional. It
took me three weeks to solve.

When the April updates were made available, I manually went to the Windows
updates web site and downloaded all updates "except" the WAG update. I knew
that my computer was 100% legal and I just did not want to install the
update yet. Note that I did NOT hide the update. I just removed the check
from the box so it would not be included in the downloads.

When I started my computer the system would totally freeze for about 90
seconds, until that darn shield disappeared. I could not open any programs.
I could not open any folders. Clicking on the start button did nothing at
all. Right clicking on the desktop - ditto! Any program/service that checked
for updates, upon starting the computer, DID NOT do so, until the shield
disappeared.

After seeing the install shield in the system notification tray for three
weeks, I went back to the Windows update web site and downloaded the WAG
update.

Everything has been fine since.

I certainly hope that Microsoft gets this sorted soon.

Richard / Doug - thank you for the reply.

Richard - WAG is installed.

Doug - Should'nt I be able to get to the update site by double clicking the
update notification shield? I realize I can go to the update site directly -
but when something isn't working right I like to fix it.

So is my problem normal or is something wrong and how do I fix it?

Thanks for your prompt responses and taking time to try and help.

I'm not sure if the problem's "normal", but it's so minor that at least to
me, it's not worth even thinking about. At the very least, try the Start
menu method. If the shield goes away, which it usually does, don't look
back. It's not your job to fix a programming error.

Did you install the latest "critical" update WAG (KB 905474)? Look in the
update history log on the update site and see if it was successful.

Months and months ago( or it might have been a couple of weeks)
since I last clicked on the yellow shield, and I think that this immediately
presented me with a window showing how many items to download. I don't
remember it taking me to the download/update site. There could not have been
a choice, because for months and months(or was it last week) I always always
go via Start.
Then I get a choice of what I want to download.
Sorry to be so vague

PS
Yes, we can only hope MS get their act together - my faith in their
abilities have been considerably eroded over the last 12 months.
For others, much longer no doubt.

antioch - LOL! Your memory is getting like mine.

Even when I click on the "shield" nothing at all happens.

It sounds like from now on when I see the "shield" I will have to go to
start > windows update to see what they want me to install - although it
isn't right.

Thanks.

As one lady I work with says " Now I can hide my own
Easter Eggs"

I had a similar problem with the shield -- it would show me
updates were available, I would select them and click
download. They would download then the shield would
vanish never telling me they were ready to install (started
doing this a month or so ago). Last set of updates seems
to have "fixed" whatever it was (at least it worked as
expected this time.
