Windows update..... not SP2!

I have had the windows update icon sitting in the notification area of
my taskbar for the greater part of the day, when I "mouse over" I get
the message 'downloading updates 0%' I have never noticed this
performance previously, does anyone know why the update is not uploading
and what to do about it?

Service pack two is several hundred megabytes so it could take days to
download on a dial up connection, depending on how often you are connected
and whether you are using the connection for other things. I would guess
that the Windows Update site has also been pretty busy with so many people
downloading SP2 now.

Hi

Are you sure it's not the download for SP2? What do you see when you right
click the icon? Dependent on what you have installed now, the download may
be between 80 & 120 Mbs. Are you using a dial-up or Broadband connection?
That will make a difference as well.

I am connected most days for upwards of 8 hours, not always busy though!
I am on a broadband connection. What has me a bit confused is why it is
still 0%!

I am on a broadband connection and there is nothing revealed by right
clicking the icon!

I really don't know then; it shouldn't take long at all on broadband. It
sounds like it has stalled for some reason.

Hi

This is with XP Home? There is a 'queue' for the download. If you are
using a Broadband connection are you leaving your PC on 24/7 for the
download?

Yes, this is XP Home but I had no intentions of leaving the computer on
24/7 as you mention, it normally goes to bed when I do! I really don't
look forward to getting it actually, it seems to be a lot of trouble to
some and I don't need trouble. Still I am not blind to the advantages it
may offer.

Hi

There's no definitive way to tell how long the download will take. However,
I hope that the XP Home Updates have finished before the 25th - that's when
it's supposedly going to be rolled out for XP Pro users. Unless that date
has changed.

I have a computer running XP Pro too so I guess if we start getting the
Win download by then, the download on this computer has definitely
stalled! Incidentally it still shows 0%....

As I recall, SP2 is about 260 MB. With a cable modem, the download should
take less than an hour. If it takes several hours, something is wrong.

It took me 8 minutes to download the 266mb multi computer SP2,. I use a
cable modem that allows 4mb download.

Leave the boxen and the connection on 24/7. The middle of
the night is the best time to download anything.
