Downloading Updates 0%?

Some time ago I got the Automatic download icon in the notification
area with a mouse over comment "Downloading Updates 0%", it stayed there
for several days until I cancelled the automatic upload capability. I
duly reactivated the automatic update option and now, several weeks
later, I have got the same situation. I am sure it has something to do
with the SP2 update download but nothing seems to be happening so what
should I do?

XP2 won't download unless you accept a license agreement. It will stay at 0%
downloading indefinitely. Your best bet is to update to SP2 via WindowsUpdate
website or ignore it until you know it's safe to upgrade to SP2.

Hi

Fyi, microsoft.public.windowsupdate is a better newsgroup for Windows
Update questions.

Anyway, you could try this and see if it helps:

Click Start >> Run >>
Type the follow command in the Open box.
"net.exe stop wuauserv" (w/o quotes)
Press Ok

Repeat the same for the following commands:

regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
regsvr32.exe wups.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe msxml3.dll
net.exe start wuauserv

If that doesn't help:

Please check this log file for any clues or other error messages:

%windir%\WindowsUpdate.log

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

To reset the temporary pending downloads, clean out the Download
folder (WU5's temporary download folder) located here:

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

You can use the procedure described here:

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/showarticle.aspx?articleid=11&ln=en

You might need to delete the DataStore folder mentioned in the link
above, as well as the Download folder.

Note that a side effect of deleting the DataStore folder is that you
lose your WU v5 History listing (not critical).

Anyway, I never uses Windows Update to install a service pack.

To install SP2 without using WU:

SP2 is available at the Microsoft Download Center
(standalone "network" version, 266 MB):

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a

If you think that download is to large, you can get the same
file on a CD from Microsoft.

The Windows XP SP2 CD order point:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

Also, before installing SP2, you should take a look at the
followng sites:
