I heard that the windows updates concerning safety
issues, which are automatically downloaded, might contain
a virus. Does anyone know if this is true? I have an
update that has been reminding me to load it for about a
month now, but am not sure I should. Thanks!

Any update downloaded via Microsoft's update feature
should be OK.
There have been some bogus emails disguised to look as if
they are from MS, but they are not. They are malicious and
do contain a virus.
Never install any "updates" sent to you in an email.

If your computer has been set to automatically download
windows updates, and you have a tiny windows logo on your
toolbar asking you to update, then it is safe! and not
only that, it is an absolute must! These updates protect
you from people hacking your system.
That being said, IF YOU EVER RECIEVE AN EMAIL PURPORTING
TO BE FROM MICROSOFT CONTAINING UPDATES THIS IS A VIRUS!
It is a good idea to check for updates on a regular
basis, and more than anything make sure anti virus
software is updated. And of course a firewall is a great
idea as well.
If you take these simple precautions, you should remain
virus free......

As long as you are using the built-in-to-XP Windows Update service, it's
ok. *DO NOT* install any updates you receive in email. all of them are
bogus (and there are a lot of them around now).

Microsoft's Windows Update site and the Automatic Updates are very safe.

The emails that you may receieve stating to process the attached update
file(s) are bogus. These are not from Microsoft and Microsoft never emails
the updates. Also, you would notice that the destination email address
would not be yours but a general one. BEWARE, for these contain viruses and
other bad stuff.

Also, for any important updates for the Microsoft XP operating systems (Home
or Pro), only trust the Automatic Updates from Microsft and Microsoft's
WindowsUpdate web site.
