Windows update failures

I've had this Gateway FX6801 for less than a week and keep getting failures
on Windows Vista Home Premium updates. Office and .Net Framework update
fine. Can anyone help, or should I just wait for Windows 7?

Hi, Frank.

The key to the solution is in the first line of your post:
I've had this Gateway FX6801 for less than a week and keep getting
failures

Take it back and insist on a computer that works!
should I just wait for Windows 7?

Well I use and highly recommend Win7. But no operating system - not even
Win7 - can fix your new computer's hardware problems. Once your hardware is
working right, Vista should work fine for you.

Since Win7 will be here in 16 days - probably before your hardware warranty
expires - you might just wait and let Gateway replace your machine with one
that has Win7 already installed.

No! It was Microsoft Update. When I had the problem I let Microsoft Update
install all the updates. Microsoft was trying to install things I didn't
need. When I chose those individually, that's what the results said. When
there were 37 updates to install, MS couldn't deal with it. When I
installed individually, 35 installed without a problem.

GOOD GATEWAY, BAD MICROSOFT

My point was, as was also pointed out by another, with a unit less than 7
days old why weren't you going to the source first?
If you've been able to stabilize it by doing selective updates - fine, good
for you.

I have found solutions are easier to get in places like this rather than
being placed on hold for long periods of time. If I had called Gateway, they
would probably told me it was an MS problem. That could have taken hour upon
hours on the phone. I just found the way you replied a bit critical or
sarcastic. If I'm wrong, and I often am, I'm very sorry.

Thanks for the comeback.

Sarcastic? I saw it as good advice. For one thing, Dell might actually
choose to replace a sick new computer. No one in this newsgroup is likely
to do that :)

I perceived "Gateway is the answer, oh lord, Gateway is THE answer" as
criticism and sarcasm against Gateway, because I didn't think hardware had
anything to do with the problem. I had an almost identical problem when I
first got another computer (Dell), and it was resolved on one of the Windows
newsgroups. At that time others were having the same problem, with other
brands as well.

I didn't intend to cause what "I perceive" to be an issue over this. I'm
sorry if I did and let's all be friends and go on with life. I appreciate
hearing you thoughts.

Well, at least my typo above is funny: since your computer is a Gateway,
I'm forced to admit that Dell is unlikely to be much help, so I retract my
statement :)

One recurring problem in newsgroups is that you can't see the face or hear
the voice of the poster, so remarks can seem harsher than intended - or
vice versa. I agree, let's be friends and get on with life, and provide an
occasional grain of salt as needed.

As an absolute certainty I am not looking to start some sort of contest but
I was not trying to be sarcastic per se and not saying anything against
Gateway.

Yes I was being flippant, I guess, but at the outset I couldn't resist
because the thread started of with an "I just got this..." expression and my
first thought was well take it back. I was trying to construct a sing-songy
line of the chorus repeating a refrain - I guess I better keep my day job.

I viewed it much the same as me going to my local mechanic and saying I just
pick up this car at the dealer and the passenger window won't go down can
you look at it. Now while he might do me a favor if he wasn't busy (he and I
go way back) but, and if I were he, I would expect him to more realistically
say why don't you just turn around and go back to the dealer.

If you're up and running then there are no problems.
Geo.
