windows update failing

We are trying to install windows update installer 3.1 but it keeps failing.
The log says cancelled. We cannot find a solution anywhere, please help

Hi Carla,
Suggestion: Close your open applications, close your antivirus. Bring up System Restore, and create a restore point.

Then use the link to download the new V2 of Windows Installer 3.1. Save the download to your HD. I'd put it into a new unique folder.
Then run that file to install it. (Again, be sure none of your usual programs are open).

One simple thing to try is make sure that your date and time are correct on
the machine. If the date is off by much, that will make the updater fail at
times.
