Windows auto update failing

We have been trying to install auto update windows installer 3.1 for weeks
now and each time it is failing. Whe we look at the log it it saying that it
has been cancelled. We have looked up the possible reasons on microsoft
update site and it doesnt give any answers. We have tried to download and
install version 2, but this also fails. Does anyone have a solution before we
go mad???
