PLEASE HELP.Can't receive auto updates from windows microsoft

For approx.4 months(17 updates)WE HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO RECEIVE AUTO UPDATES
FROM WINDOWS MICROSOFT.IT SEEMS TO HAVE HAPPENED AROUND THE SAME TIME WE
SWITCHED FROM CABLE MODEM TO DSL.DON'T KNOW IF ONE HAS TO DO WITH THE
OTHER.WHEN WE GO TO MICROSOFT UPDATES MANUALLY IT GOES TO THE UPDATE SCREEN,
BUT SHOWS NO PROGRESS THEN IT FINALLY SAYS UNABLE TO INSTALL UPDATES.I ADMIT
I AM COMPUTER IMPAIRED,SO PLEASE HELP...
